Ces noms de domaine peuvent comporter des caractères avec signes diacritiques (autres que ceux contenus dans l'ASCII : lettres de A à Z, chiffres de 0 à 9, tiret, etc.) qu'exigent la plupart des langues européennes ou des caractères différents de ceux de l'alphabet latin (par exemple arabes ou chinois). Un système convertit automatiquement les caractères spéciaux en caractères ASCII. Exemple : 'www.république-française.fr' s'exprimera en IDN sour la forme 'www.xn--rpublique-franaise-lvb0a.fr', une fois interprété.
